Griebel, Jude

b. 1978
Jude Griebel is a Canadian artist based between Montréal and Sundre, Alberta.

His work explores the convergence of corporeal and imaginary experience through themes of memory, growth and mortality. His paintings depict individuals in allegorical and supernatural situations, imbuing everyday settings with otherworldly significance.  Figures are typically depicted in states of disappearing, suggesting escape and disengagement from the realities of life. The liminal atmosphere of these works pays tribute to the transitory and mythical settings of picture book illustration, archival spirit photography, and theatrical stage design.

Griebel's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions internationally, most recently in Los Angeles and Iceland. He has worked as an artist in residence in Canada and the U.S.A, as well as at Workshop OM, Japan, the Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium, and the Nes Centre, Iceland. Griebel is the recent recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation. In 2007, the Burnaby Art Gallery presented a survey exhibition of his works on paper, with an accompanying publication titled A Cast of Shadows. His paintings and drawings have recently been added to the permanent collections of the Sakima Art Museum (Japan), the Burnaby Art Gallery, The Yukon Arts Centre Public Art Gallery and the Colart Contemporary Canadian Art Collection.

Upcoming solo exhibitions include Away Maker at Populus Tremula Gallery in Akuyreri, Iceland (April 2011), and Apparitions: Works on Paper at Islensk Grafik in Reykjavik, Iceland (April 2011).
